{"id":585,"date":"2019-04-20T11:16:21","date_gmt":"2019-04-20T09:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/winstars.net\/en\/?p=585"},"modified":"2023-03-19T23:11:05","modified_gmt":"2023-03-19T22:11:05","slug":"585","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/winstars.net\/en\/2019\/04\/20\/585\/","title":{"rendered":"Gaia Data Release 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"relative flex w-[calc(100%-50px)] flex-col gap-1 md:gap-3 lg:w-[calc(100%-115px)]\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-grow flex-col gap-3\">\n<div class=\"min-h-[20px] flex flex-col items-start gap-4 whitespace-pre-wrap\">\n<div class=\"markdown prose w-full break-words dark:prose-invert dark\">\n<p>After several weeks of effort, the second catalog of the Gaia mission has been successfully integrated into WinStars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>As a reminder, the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gaia_(spacecraft)\">Gaia mission<\/a> aims to map a portion of the Milky Way (1%) in 3D by assessing the proper motion of the celestial bodies listed. This colossal task is carried out by a satellite positioned at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lagrangian_point\">Lagrange 2 point<\/a>, which performs 500 million measurements daily.<\/p>\n<p>The previous catalogs, such as Sky2000, UCAC4, and I\/280B, have been replaced to make way for the 1.7 billion stars featured in this second edition, published in April 2018, one year ago.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/winstars.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/GDR2_fluxRGB_cartesian_4000x2000.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-586 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/winstars.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/GDR2_fluxRGB_cartesian_4000x2000.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/winstars.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/GDR2_fluxRGB_cartesian_4000x2000.png 1024w, https:\/\/winstars.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/GDR2_fluxRGB_cartesian_4000x2000-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/winstars.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/04\/GDR2_fluxRGB_cartesian_4000x2000-768x384.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since it is not reasonable to retrieve all of the data from DR2, WinStars only uses right ascension, declination, parallax, proper motion, and G magnitude for objects with a magnitude lower than 13. Beyond this limit, the program only retrieves hourly coordinates and magnitude.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A version 3 in 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Gaia mission&#8217;s measurement campaign continues, and a version 3 of the catalog is expected in 2022 with increased data accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>We are only at the beginning of the mission. In the long run, the entire structure of our galaxy, its dynamics, and evolution will be better understood through the analysis of this vast amount of information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scientific data freely accessible thanks to the CDS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I would like to conclude by acknowledging the work of the <a href=\"http:\/\/cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr\/index-fr.gml\"><em>Centre de Donn\u00e9es de Strasbourg<\/em><\/a>, a true virtual memory of the sky, which makes available to everyone the data collected by the largest observatories and collaborations like Gaia.
